Can Voting Systems be monkeyed with? Decide for Yourself! Congress has been investigating! The Gremlin's are gonna getcha! Imagine you were at a voting place. You mark your vote on a piece of paper then hand it to a gremlin. The gremlin then takes the note into a gremlin box where no one can see him and compares the note to his secret naughty and nice list given to him by Santa. The gremlin is very loyal to Santa and always performs his bidding. Santa is a very jealous man and never lets anyone see his list. If everyone is on the nice list then the votes tabulate as you would expect. If someone is on the naughty list then the gremlin changes the vote so they lose. Either way, the gremlin eats the note at the end. At the end of the poll the gremlin tells you who won. Would you accept such a system? Of course not, most people would say. Now the Gremlin is like a computer. And Santa's List is like a program. Santa is the programmer. If it is a "Good Santa List" then using the gremlin voting machine is no problem. However if you have a "Bad Santa List" then you have a very serious problem. Now we want to know, is there any way to prove that we only run Good Santa Lists on our Gremlin Machines? That is to say, can we prove that we are running only a good vote program and not a bad one? The answer to this question is NO! We can NEVER know this. --------------------------- All you have to do is develop a voting system that is more reliable than a room full of humans. That's not quite as big of a burden as perfect is. I've heard this argument as well. Let us analyze it from a game theory standpoint. Let us have 2 systems. System A has a MINIMUM error rate of less than 1% if done properly. System A has a MAXIMUM error of around 5%. System B has a MINIMUM error rate of less than 1% if done properly. System B has a MAXIMUM error rate of 1000000000000000000000000000000%. Which one should we logically choose to count our votes? Obviously System A. System A is hand counting the vote. System B is computer counting. Remember the Pinto or Why Isn't the Performance of Our Voting Machines as Important as the Performance of Our Blenders by Andi Novick Excerpt (for the whole story click the above link): When it was discovered that the Pinto had a serious design flaw, seriousness enough to cause death by immolation, apparently Ford permitted those defective cars to stay on the road. Future cars could be redesigned, but as to the existing cars, well the money just didn't justify it. Ford had calculated that the cost to redesign and repair existing cars was greater than the cost of paying off possible lawsuits for resulting deaths and accordingly decided not to recall the cars. Another way of looking at the decision exposed by the infamous Ford Pinto Memo that revealed Ford's logic might be described as gross disregard for human lives in favor of profits. Applying that same value-based logic to the threatened democracy of the United States, a committee of the HAVA-created Election Assistance Commission (EAC) has determined that although touch screen voting machines (DREs) "are vulnerable to errors and fraud and cannot be made secure" (translate: will continue to put candidates into office in disregard of the votes of the American citizens) Americans will nonetheless be required to continue voting on them! Four out of the five local Hill County candidates had the results from the General Election held November 7th, recounted. After looking at the recount results, can anyone explain why the Paper ballots mostly went to the Democrats (barely) and the Touch Screen machine (iVotronic) results flipped overwhelmingly in favor of the Republicans? The re-counters couldn't help but notice it. Use your favorite search engine (i.e. Google) and search for "iVotronic problems", and I think you'll begin to understand. Take a look for yourself!!! Permission to reprint or excerpt granted with link to www.blackboxvoting.org Hill County Texas had results that fluctuated wildly on Election Night -- ES&S blamed their own technician -- Four Hill County candidates have filed for a recount. ES&S equipment saw a Texas-sized meltdown in the November election, but ES&S says not to worry, didn't affect the votes. Nevertheless, ES&S wasn't too sure whether they wanted anyone to get the records for the mess. In a note from ES&S to Hill County elections chief Patsy Damschen, ES&S's Chris Moody writes, "Who is asking for these reports? Depending on who is asking for them, we may have a problem." (Here's a copy of that document): ES&S: Depending who's asking, may be a problem www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages/1954/Email_EA_Asst_to_ES_S_Nov_8_2006-45413.pdf Woops, that's the wrong one, try this: www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages/1954/Email_ES_S_to_EA_Nov_14_2006_1_-45422.pdf Servers crashed, mismatched times appeared, and error messages stuttered onto the screen 22 times in 60 seconds, and that was just the beginning of a long, long evening. See these pollwatcher notes for more evidence: Contemporaneous notes from a Hill County tabulation room pollwatcher - yikes! www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages/1954/PollWatchNotes-45414.pdf THE VENDOR'S SONG: "IT DIDN'T AFFECT THE ELECTION" Well now that's hard to know, isn't it, since the machines are paperless touch-screens and the results around 1:30 in the morning showed fewer votes than they had a half-hour earlier. Results sheet at 1:27 am www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages/1954/Hill_Summary_127am_final-45415.pdf Results sheet at 5 min to 1 www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages/1954/Hill_Summary_1255am-45416.pdf The problems in Hill County reportedly are not due to the special election that ES&S admits caused last-minute manual changes on memory cards, or electronic ballots boxes (who examined that?), in 34 other Texas counties. Some counties, like Hidalgo, didn't get their fix and couldn't get their votes counted on time: ------------------------------------------------------- quote: "The special election held in 34 Texas counties on Election Day required ES&S staff to manually change information in the electronic ballot files. Regrettably, this step was missed in Hidalgo County...We sincerely regret that this caused any delay in the reporting of results," -------------------------------------------------------- That's what Chris Moody of ES&S wrote to Hidalgo County , who faxed this letter to Black Box Voting with a cover letter that said "FOR IMMEDIATE ATTENTION". BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: On Nov. 10, ES&S wrote to county elections officials throughout Texas to admit that problems had been found, and to urge them to send information on this to an ES&S location in Addison, Texas: ES&S equipment repair notice www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages/1954/Equipment_Repair_email-45417.pdf Meanwhile citizens in Sarasota, Florida have filed a lawsuit for a whole new election on the ES&S equipment. Not to worry, ES&S has sidestepped any blame, or even any explanation, stating that the Sarasota people didn't avail themselves of the ES&S technicians: ES&S Sarasota letter www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages/1954/ESS_Sarasota_Letter-anon-45418.pdf By now, painful as it may be, Sarasota may be glad that it didn't. ES&S has reportedly outsourced its service and maintenance to other firms, and there is apparently a shortage of both trained technicians and parts, nationwide. Even the experienced subcontractors, like Casto & Harris in West Virginia, are revealing records that inspire more questions than confidence, like this one, obtained by Black Box Voting in public records from West Virginia: www.bbvforums.org/forums/messages/1954/45419.jpg So you can activate one ES&S memory card with another? What can you do with it when you activate it? Can you activate it with an infrared device that is not part of the ES&S system? How close do you have to be? Stay tuned. There will be more breaking on this Thanksgiving turkey. Democratic Party News Big BLUE Butt December 18 - Well lookie here. The Republican Party of Texas, that bastion of self-righteousness, just entered into a negotiated settlement with the Federal Elections Commission to pay a $7,500 fine for Failure to Disclose $235,000 in Contributions. PDF format of the agreement right here. To add stink to this garbage, Christopher Maska was the treasurer of the Republican Party of Texas when the Party's FEC reports got "unreported." Hummm.... would that be the same Christopher Maska who is an administrative judge, president of the Texas Alliance for Life, and the ethics officer of the Texas Board of Education ? Could we be that lucky in the hypocrisy department? Ding! Ding! Ding! Yes, we have a winner. We are, in fact, that lucky! Maska wins a trip down Hypocrisy Lane with his rightwing buddies and two cartons of Can-O-Fraudulence in his favorite fragrance - Sweet Southern Sweat of Symbolism. On the other hand, a $7,500 fine for not reporting $235,000 in contributions is just the price of doing business when you're shooting for the big prize: a one-party government. |
